When one bottom roller assembly fails, inspect the other assembly before deciding the repair scope. Replacing both compatible supports is often sensible when they share substantial wear, but the decision should follow condition and the system's design. A matched repair means appropriate geometry and support, not blindly fitting any two parts with the same label.

The second assembly has a service history too

Both supports have carried the same panel through its daily travel. If one shows advanced wear or corrosion, the other deserves inspection even if the failure is less obvious. A wheel that turns by hand can still have roughness, play or mounting damage that affects loaded operation.

SWISCO recommends replacing both patio-door assemblies in relevant product guidance. That is a useful starting recommendation, not proof that every old assembly carries exactly half the load or that a new one will β€œwork twice as hard” in all circumstances.

Define what matched means for this door

The assemblies should provide the specified wheel-to-rail contact, mounting and working-height requirements. Some systems have handed or otherwise distinct components. Matching the designed arrangement does not always mean every visible feature or catalog number must be identical.

A provider should explain the intended pair. Two parts of different heights chosen simply because both fit into the panel can create a poor support arrangement. Conversely, a documented system-specific pair should not be rejected just because its components have different identifying numbers.

Compare three repair situations

An older panel with roughness at both bottom supports may justify replacing both worn assemblies. A panel with a recently documented compatible assembly at one side and an isolated failure at the other may call for a different decision. A door with rail damage also needs the contact surface included in the assessment.

Those are illustrative situations, not automatic rules. Condition, compatibility, access and the manufacturer's replacement instructions should determine the recommendation. Ask which situation the provider actually found in your door.

One new assembly can leave an old symptom

If the second support remains rough or poorly adjusted, overall movement can still be disappointing. The homeowner may reasonably think the replacement did nothing because effort at the handle includes the entire panel's resistance. The invoice should explain whether the remaining assembly was inspected, retained or excluded.

Replacing both will not solve every symptom either. A local track dent or overly thick weatherstrip can still interfere. A complete explanation separates assembly condition from unrelated contact, rather than selling a pair as a universal cure.

Consider access without inventing savings

Panel handling and setup are part of roller work. Performing appropriate work during one supported inspection may avoid repeating some steps later. The actual cost difference depends on the system and provider, so do not assume a fixed discount or promise a specific future saving.

Ask for the price and scope of the reasonable options. The comparison should state which assemblies, adjustment and testing are included. It should also distinguish any track, lock or frame work that requires separate authorization.

Keep the old and new identification clear

Photographs of both removed assemblies can preserve useful evidence. Record the selected replacement and any retained component. That helps future service providers avoid assuming the door still contains its original pair.

Before completion, observe normal travel in both directions and closing and locking. Look for an uneven reveal or a remaining rubbing point. The acceptance test should relate to the agreed repair, not to a dramatic demonstration with the panel pushed unusually hard.

Questions homeowners ask

Is replacing just one always a mistake?

No. It can be appropriate in a documented condition-specific situation. The mistake is retaining an incompatible or badly worn support without assessment and without explaining the resulting scope.

Will identical wheel diameters guarantee a matched pair?

No. Housing height, profile, mounting and adjustment still matter. Equal diameter is only one part of compatibility and does not establish that the complete assemblies belong together.

What should a clear quote say?

It should identify whether one or both complete assemblies are being replaced, why any assembly is retained and which alignment and operation checks are included. Ask for track or other work to be described separately.
